How to travel to the Last Paradise – Raja Ampat

Dreaming of turquoise waters, vibrant coral reefs, and secluded islands? Look no further than Raja Ampat, Indonesia’s hidden gem. But how do you get there? In this guide, I’ll walk you through the logistical process of how to travel to Raja Ampat. I also include the prices as off April 2024.

Step 1: Getting to Sorong

Your adventure begins with a flight to Sorong, the gateway to Raja Ampat. Domine Eduard Osok Airport in Sorong in the province of West-Papua is well-connected, with daily flights operated by several airlines from major cities in Indonesia like Jakarta, Bali, or Makassar. Flight duration varies depending on your departure point, with most flights taking around 3-4 hours. Just one personal note: if you book your flights with Lion Air, be prepared for delays and cancellations. If you have a connecting international flight after your return from Raja Ampat, please give yourself at least a 6-hour time frame in between flights.

I made a Sorong Travel Guide for everyone who needs to spend one night (or more) in Sorong due to ferry & flight schedules. You can find all my favorites in this blog.

Step 2: Arranging Transportation to the Islands

Upon arrival in Sorong, you’ll need to arrange transportation to the islands of Raja Ampat. Sorong Harbor serves as the main departure point for ferries and speedboats to the various islands in the archipelago. Private speedboats & public ferries operate daily, offering a range of options to suit your budget and schedule.

Public Ferries:

Public ferries are the most budget-friendly option for traveling between Sorong and the islands of Raja Ampat. If you are travelling to Central Raja Ampat, which includes the popular island like Kri & Mansuar, you’ll have to take the ferry to Waisai.

The public ferry departs every day at 9 am and at 2 pm. Tickets can only be bought at the harbor. The price of an economy class ticket is 125K IDR per person. You can buy the VIP class ticket for 250K IDR per person. The journey takes around 2 hours.

Private Speedboats:

For travelers seeking a faster and more convenient option, private speedboats are available for hire. These speedboats offer a more personalized experience and can be arranged in advance through your accommodation or local tour operators. While they may be more expensive, private speedboats offer greater flexibility in terms of departure times and destinations. Private speedboats prices start from 6 million IDR per boat (around 350 euro’s). The journey from Sorong to Waisai takes around 1.5 hours.

Step 3: Choosing Accommodation

Raja Ampat offers a variety of options ranging from budget-friendly homestays to luxury resorts. Many accommodations are located on the main islands like Waigeo, Batanta, and Kri & Mansuar, offering easy access to dive sites and other attractions. Once you’ve booked your accomodation, I’d highly recommend to first ask your accommodation about their transport options. From Waisai to Kri island takes around 40-60 minutes (depending on the enginge of the boat).

Your accommodation will be able to tell their price, but also if any other guests already requested a transfer. If not, you can go for the option to look for other people in the harbor of Waisai to share a boat with. Note: Prices are always per boat, NOT per person.

Before you start complaining about “how expensive Raja Ampat is”; it’s also expensive for the locals to live here. In the East part of Indonesian life in general is more expensive. One of the main reasons is because of the higher benzine/gasoline prices compared to other parts of the country.

4. Exploring the Islands

With transportation and accommodation sorted, it’s time to start exploring! Raja Ampat is renowned for its pristine beaches, lush jungles, and world-class diving spots. Whether you’re interested in snorkeling, hiking, birdwatching, or simply soaking up the sun, there’s no shortage of activities to keep you entertained.

5. Respecting the Environment

As you explore Raja Ampat, it’s essential to remember that this pristine ecosystem is fragile and in need of protection. Be sure to follow responsible travel practices, such as avoiding single-use plastics, refraining from touching or disturbing marine life, and supporting local conservation efforts.

Conclusion: With its stunning natural beauty and abundant marine life, Raja Ampat is a destination like no other. By following these logistical steps, you can make your dream of traveling to this tropical paradise a reality. So pack your bags, book your tickets, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime in Raja Ampat! Do you still have any questions? How to travel to Raja Ampat? Here’s a detailed gui How to travel to Raja Ampat? Here’s a detailed guide to help you make your way to this remote paradise! 🌴✈️👇

Are you thinking about visiting Raja Ampat? Let me break it down step-by-step:

1. Fly to Sorong (SOQ) – The nearest airport. Direct flights are available from Jakarta, Bali, Ambon, Manado & Makassar. 🌏✈️

2. Public Ferry to Waisai – From Sorong, catch the ferry to Waisai. It departs daily at 9 AM and 2 PM, taking around 2 hours. 🚢💨 Economy tickets are 125K + 12K (port tax), or you can opt for VIP tickets at 250K + 12K. Tip: You don’t need to arrive early at the harbor, trust me. 😅

3. Tourist Registration – Once you’re in Waisai, walk to the tourist registration office (just 5 minutes). You’ll pay your national park entry fees here. 📝

4. Boat to Your Destination – The final leg of your journey! I recommend asking your accommodation if they offer transport. Alternatively, you can arrange a boat at the harbor, but there’s a bit of risk involved. 🚤

5. Share the Ride – Boat trips are often priced per boat, so why not split the cost? 🛥️💸 Ask your host if they know of any other guests arriving at the same time, or make friends on the ferry! 👫

6. Sit Back & Relax – Once you’re on the boat (or a taxi if you’re staying on Waigeo), enjoy the ride! And yes, bring a raincoat. Most accommodations pick you up with a longboat. 🌧️

A quick note:
* Misool Ferry: If you’re heading to Misool, note that the public ferry leaves only on Monday evenings from Sorong. 🚢
* Luxury option: If you’re willing to splurge, you can arrange a direct transfer from Sorong to one of the islands, but expect to pay around 6 million IDR. 💸

It’s a journey.. but it’s worth it! 😙

Who would ever thought this girl from the southern part of the Netherlands would end up living the slow life on a tropical island?!

Well definitely not me when I bought my very spontaneous ticket to Bali around 4 years ago. 😅

(And I think if my parents would have known before hand, they would have hidden my passport somewhere 🤣).

Cheers to more adventures, let’s be a bit more spontaneous guys and get out of your comfort zone!! It might lead you to Moluccan boyfriends and life on a tropical island 🌴✨🫶🏻
