The 10 best scuba diving spots in Indonesia (2023)

Welcome to the enchanting world of Indonesian underwater wonders. Indonesia is a diver’s dream, boasting some of the most biodiverse and breathtaking marine ecosystems on the planet. In this blog post, we’ll embark on a journey through the 10 best diving spots in Indonesia, each known for its unique underwater experiences. Whether you’re an experienced diver or a novice eager to explore the deep blue, Indonesia offers a wide array of marine life and captivating seascapes that will leave you in awe.

So where to go scuba diving in Indonesia?

1. Raja Ampat, West Papua

Why it’s the best: Raja Ampat is often hailed as the “heart of the coral triangle.” It’s known for its healthy reefs, stunning biodiversity, and vibrant coral gardens. Divers here encounter everything from pygmy seahorses to massive manta rays. For more information on Raja Ampat aka my home, you can read more here.

2. Komodo National Park, Komodo Island

The Komodo Islands are a haven for adrenaline-seeking divers. In addition to encountering Komodo dragons, you’ll dive into strong currents teeming with sharks, mantas, and vibrant fish life.

3. Bunaken, North Sulawesi

Bunaken’s crystal-clear waters provide incredible visibility. Its steep walls offer a front-row seat to the “wall of fish,” and it’s a hotspot for macro photography, with rare tiny animals like pygmy seahorses.

4. Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi

Wakatobi is all about luxury diving. Pristine reefs, a private dive resort, and world-class marine biodiversity, including an array of stunning coral species.

5. Bali

Bali offers diverse dive experiences from wreck diving to exploring vibrant coral gardens. The USAT Liberty Shipwreck in Tulamben is a renowned highlight. Also don’t forget that Nusa Penida is part of the province of Bali. Here you can encounter manta rays almost all year round.

6. Alor, East Nusa Tenggara

Alor remains a hidden gem, known for its healthy reefs, colorful coral formations, and encounters with unique marine species like rhinopias and mandarinfish.

7. The Lembeh Strait, North Sulawesi

The Lembeh Strait is celebrated as the “Critter Capital of the World.” It’s the ultimate destination for macro photography and rare, quirky marine life sightings.

8. Gili Islands, Lombok

The Gili Islands are perfect for beginners and offer opportunities for diving with turtles, exploring underwater sculptures, and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere. This is a popular destination to combine with your trip to Bali.

9. Banda Islands, Maluku

The Banda Islands are known for their historical shipwrecks, dramatic underwater volcanic formations, and encounters with hammerhead sharks and abundant coral gardens.

10. Togean Islands, Central Sulawesi

The Togean Islands offer off-the-beaten-path diving, with a laid-back atmosphere, underwater caves, and vibrant coral reefs.

Conclusion:

Indonesia’s diverse and pristine diving spots offer an amazingjourney beneath the waves. From the coral triangle’s heart in Raja Ampat to the critter-filled waters of Lembeh, each location holds its unique appeal. Whether you seek adrenaline-pumping encounters or tranquil underwater exploration, Indonesia’s waters have it all. Discover the unmatched beauty of these top 10 diving destinations, and let the underwater world of Indonesia captivate your soul.

How to travel to Raja Ampat? Here’s a detailed gui How to travel to Raja Ampat? Here’s a detailed guide to help you make your way to this remote paradise! 🌴✈️👇

Are you thinking about visiting Raja Ampat? Let me break it down step-by-step:

1. Fly to Sorong (SOQ) – The nearest airport. Direct flights are available from Jakarta, Bali, Ambon, Manado & Makassar. 🌏✈️

2. Public Ferry to Waisai – From Sorong, catch the ferry to Waisai. It departs daily at 9 AM and 2 PM, taking around 2 hours. 🚢💨 Economy tickets are 125K + 12K (port tax), or you can opt for VIP tickets at 250K + 12K. Tip: You don’t need to arrive early at the harbor, trust me. 😅

3. Tourist Registration – Once you’re in Waisai, walk to the tourist registration office (just 5 minutes). You’ll pay your national park entry fees here. 📝

4. Boat to Your Destination – The final leg of your journey! I recommend asking your accommodation if they offer transport. Alternatively, you can arrange a boat at the harbor, but there’s a bit of risk involved. 🚤

5. Share the Ride – Boat trips are often priced per boat, so why not split the cost? 🛥️💸 Ask your host if they know of any other guests arriving at the same time, or make friends on the ferry! 👫

6. Sit Back & Relax – Once you’re on the boat (or a taxi if you’re staying on Waigeo), enjoy the ride! And yes, bring a raincoat. Most accommodations pick you up with a longboat. 🌧️

A quick note:
* Misool Ferry: If you’re heading to Misool, note that the public ferry leaves only on Monday evenings from Sorong. 🚢
* Luxury option: If you’re willing to splurge, you can arrange a direct transfer from Sorong to one of the islands, but expect to pay around 6 million IDR. 💸

It’s a journey.. but it’s worth it! 😙

Who would ever thought this girl from the southern part of the Netherlands would end up living the slow life on a tropical island?!

Well definitely not me when I bought my very spontaneous ticket to Bali around 4 years ago. 😅

(And I think if my parents would have known before hand, they would have hidden my passport somewhere 🤣).

Cheers to more adventures, let’s be a bit more spontaneous guys and get out of your comfort zone!! It might lead you to Moluccan boyfriends and life on a tropical island 🌴✨🫶🏻
